I am a huge fan of Arnold Lobel’s work on the Frog and Toad books. Like evryone else, I am also a huge fan of memes! I was quite sad to hear that Matt Furie’s Pepe had become a symbol for hate. Wanting to fight back I created this.
Frog and Toad is a children’s book series about two unlikely friends. I choose to paint Pepe’s face onto frog because the original illustration already had a strong message and the art is very recognizable. It also worked because it was contrary to the hateful Pepe images that were making rounds on the internet.
The original idea was to use just the illustration itself as the poster. Instead I choose to mock up the book itself with some dramatic lighting. This along with the vintage lighting really helps to capture the tone of the message. It also serves as a reminder, that there was a time before the internet when we could all be friends like Pepe and Toad!
On another note:
MEMES ARE ART!
